Ohio Train Derailment: DeWine Provides Update on Repair Work

East Palestine, Ohio — Governor Mike DeWine joined city, state and federal leaders in East Palestine on Tuesday, Norfolk Southern train derailment.

Debra Shore, Michael Regan and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Congressman Bill Johnson are among the officials who will join the governor at a news conference on Tuesday.

Additionally, DeWine will discuss a health assessment clinic that opened this week after residents expressed concerns about health related to the derailment.

DeWine said the plume of chemicals that flowed into the Ohio River after the derailment had disintegrated and was no longer a problem. However, residents complained of lingering headaches and itchy eyes.

The president of Norfolk Southern was criticized by residents and political leaders for the company’s handling of the derailment after visiting East Palestine.

Fox Business reports that the company’s president and CEO, Alan Shaw, told reporters on Saturday that he was there to “support the community,” but declined to comment further.

DeWine said Shaw had to go to Eastern Palestine to answer questions.

On Tuesday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wants the country’s freight railroads to act immediately to improve safety while regulators seek to tighten safety rules.

Buttigieg announced the reforms two days after he warned the company to keep its promises to clean up the chaos just outside of East Palestine and help the town recover.

Norfolk Southern has pledged that the company will ensure that residents and the environment “not only recover but thrive.”
