Truck carrying toxic soil from train derailment site in Eastern Palestine, Ohio capsizes in Columbiana County

East Palestine, Ohio (WKBN) – Trucks carrying toxic dirt Derailment site of the Eastern Palestinian Railway It capsized in Columbiana County just before 1pm on Monday.

A commercial vehicle carrying 40,000 pounds of contaminated soil from a train derailment was involved in a crash on State Route 165 near Waterford Road, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The driver is Philip Falk, 74, of McDonald, Pennsylvania. He suffered minor injuries in the crash and was charged with operating the vehicle without reasonable control.

A north-facing tractor-trailer veered off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch and a utility pole, and capsized to the right. Highway Patrol estimates that about 20,000 pounds of dirt was spilled onto the road and shoulders.

The local fire department and the Ohio Department of Environmental Protection were called to the scene.

According to the Ohio EPA, the spill is contained and does not pose a threat to nearby waterways.

The Ohio Department of Transportation closed Route 165 at State Route 617 in Mahoning County and State Route 14 in Columbiana County, but the road has since reopened.
