Ottawa — A 77-year-old Cloverdale man spends the rest of his life in jail for sexually abusing two young girls.
Fifty years after Larry Burkhart was convicted of three rapes and six violent sexual assaults at the Putnam County Common Pleasure Court on Friday morning, with first and third felony charges, respectively. Was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Judge Keith Schierloh convicted him after a day of testimony. After Burkhart waived the constitutional right to have the jury hear the case, Ciellow was the only fact-finding judge in the trial. The judge had less than an hour of deliberation before making a decision.
The indictment against Burkhart alleges that the case occurred between January 2017 and October 2019. He was charged with sexually abusing two female victims.
Todd Schroeder, assistant prosecutor of the Putnam County Public Prosecutor’s Office, said in closing arguments: These events are horrifying. The defendant stole something valuable (from the victim).
Schroeder confessed “over and over” while Brantark was investigating alleged sexual abuse, stood on the testimony stand for his defense on Tuesday, and “accidentally” touched the victim. He said he confessed when he admitted.
At a sentencing hearing on Friday, Ciellow sentenced Burkhart to life imprisonment for 25 years for one rape and eight years for the remaining two rapes. These judgments were ordered to be sentenced in succession, along with three sexual extortion charges.
Burkhart has been classified as a Tier 3 sex offender.
