“I spoke with the kids who were in the car with my son and they said they saw the police after the shooting, going in circles and going around circles,” Burley said. . “They stopped the police and told them their friend had been shot. They didn’t come from there and they didn’t know where to go. The cops wouldn’t help, so I googled it. ”

Body camera footage obtained by police FOX 8 I-TEAM shows a police officer telling a dispatcher to follow the victim’s car to the hospital. The officer told the dispatcher that the victim had been shot and could not breathe.

The victim’s friend, who was from Brunswick and unfamiliar with the area, began to take a wrong turn.

“You’re going the wrong way,” a policeman can be heard yelling at the driver. The driver asked the police to guide them, and the police then said he would.

Body camera video shows that it took about 6 minutes and 30 seconds from the time officers began chasing the vehicle until the victim reached the hospital. He died some time later.

“Minutes and seconds count. Why didn’t he get out of the car and try first aid to stop the bleeding?” Burley said. Why didn’t he call EMS? I don’t understand why he didn’t call for help sooner. ”

We reached out to Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel to ask if officers were following the appropriate policies. The chief did not answer our questions, but he released the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened by this horrific crime and extend my condolences to the family and friends of My Xavier Canady,” Merkel said. I am confident that I will be arrested and arrested. In accordance with protocol, this case will be reviewed for full compliance with Warren Police Department policies and procedures.”

Gilbert Rucker, an attorney representing the family, said he was working to get answers for the family.

“Saving and preserving the life of this young man seems deliberately indifferent,” Rucker said.

Rucker and Burley say they want answers.

“They were driving with flat tires,” Burley said. “They were shot and killed. How did they manage to go so fast with a flat tire? My concern is that these are children. Why did the police get out of his car, pressurize him, Didn’t you help him by being the first responder?”
