A Delphos man sentenced to two years in prison for starting a fire in a small apartment

Lima — A Delphos man, who was suffering from substance abuse problems and his lawyer explained that he had limited mental abilities, was sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday for a small fire in a Delphos apartment complex earlier this year. I was sentenced.

Jerry Spar, 53, was found guilty of one exacerbated arson on September 27 as part of a judicial deal with a prosecutor. In return for the plea, the state agreed to dismiss a similar felony sentence.

Kenneth Stargill, a public defender in Allen County, said a small pile of smoldering debris thrown out of a window by a client in a fire that ignited a spar in an apartment at 111 Main Street in Delphos on April 2. He said it was composed of.

“Mr. Spar had been kicked out, and he had an ongoing feud with the landlord,” Stargill said. “He had been using stimulants for several days, and this was just a bad decision based on the low points of his life. He is not a firebug.”

Before the ruling, Spar said, “I didn’t mean to burn the building. I was just angry.”

Officers previously dealt with Spar by breaking windows and behaving erratically. According to court documents, on April 2, when they climbed the stairs to Spar’s apartment, the Delphos man did not answer the door, but was heard screaming inconsistently.

A policeman entered through a broken door and noticed that the apartment was in a “confused state.” Spar was reportedly “violently upset” and bleeding from his hands. He was reportedly angry with Bill Manager Ben Jones for kicking him out and told police he wanted to kill him.

Spar was arrested for creating those threats.

In late May, Spar was acquitted for madness, but after two separate psychiatric assessments, he was found to be capable of withstanding the trial.

Judge Geoffrey Reed, a common petition court in Allen County, sentenced Spar to two years in prison, but said he was eligible to demand early release after serving the six-month sentence.

He must be registered with the local government each year as a convicted arsonist.
