Airtel conducts India’s first 5G trial with Nokia in 700MHz band

New Delhi: Bharti Airtel said it has partnered with Nokia to successfully launch India’s first 5G trial in the 700MHz band. Airtel has been assigned test spectra in multiple bands by the government for 5G technology and use case validation.

The demonstration in the suburbs of Kolkata was also the first 5G trial in eastern India.

Airtel and Nokia were able to take advantage of the enhanced propagation characteristics of the 700 MHz bandwidth to achieve 40 km of high-speed wireless broadband network coverage between two 3GPP standard 5G sites under real-world conditions. Airtel used equipment from Nokia’s 5G portfolio, including Nokia AirScale radios and stand-alone (SA) cores.

“In 2012, Airtel launched India’s first 4G service in Kolkata. Today we are India’s first 5G in the city’s coveted 700MHz band to showcase the power of this technical standard.
