Amherst honors police officers Jake Podolski and Brandon Stanton for saving lives – Morning Journal

The shift began as usual on September 12th for Jake Podolski and Brandon Stanton of the Amherst Police Department.

Patrolling all over Amherst, Stanton stumbled upon Nordson Depot just outside town when his shift and life changed forever.

“Police Stanton was patrolling near the Nordson Depot at 671 Franklin Avenue at approximately 2:55 p.m. on September 12 when he heard what appeared to be a cry for help coming from the area. Amherst Police Chief Mark Cawson said. “Upon arriving at the scene, Stanton observed a man lying on the ground in a gravel warehouse just off the tracks.”

A 42-year-old man from Amherst fell to the ground and cried for help.

“He looked like he had been run over by a train,” Stanton said. “I immediately called backup and an ambulance and went straight to action.”

Mr Stanton, a three-year veteran who has served five months with the Amherst Police Department, said he neglected his training and put a tourniquet on the man’s leg.

Podolsky arrived moments later, followed Stanton and applied a tourniquet to the man’s other leg.

“It is because of the actions of these officers that the man survived and is recovering at home,” Cawthon said. “Thanks to their efforts on behalf of the Amherst Police Department, these officers I will receive the Medal of Life.”

The two executives are first-time recipients of the award.

“To receive this award, officers must demonstrate an extraordinary life-saving commitment,” Cawthon said.

Sergeant Brian Bowers was also recognized for assisting the two officers.

“I know it was a very difficult scene, and I think they did a good job without hesitation,” Corson said. “I had the opportunity to review the footage and in it I saw two police officers trained and applied it in a calm and compassionate way.”
