Bowling Green, Ohio — Universities are seeing promising numbers towards the end of the fall semester as cases of COVID-19 are declining in northwestern Ohio.

Bowling Green State University closed the #VaxBGSU campaign a few weeks ago, with leaders calling it a success as cases of COVID-19 decreased and vaccination rates increased.

With two COVID-19 vaccinations and a subsequent phone call, one BGSU freshman is on her way to pay for college.

“I didn’t expect to get all this. I thought I would get something like an AirPod or a little prize. It’s insane to actually get a free tuition,” said a freshman. Anna Fitch said.

Fitch has won the Grand Prize for free tuition for up to four years through the #VaxBGSU program.

Similar to Ohio’s Vaccine Incentive Program, the goal was to get as many students, staff, and faculty as possible to be vaccinated.

“Where we sit, about 64% of the total student population reports that they have started the vaccination process. Looking at the students in the dormitory, it is even higher at 70% (range). “Chief Health and Wellness Officer Benbati said.

BGSU leaders say this is a win-win. Greater campus and community protection allows students to enter their name to win prizes.

“I was going to pay the college myself with a loan etc. So when I first graduate from college it really helps me and I don’t have to pay so much. So it really helps “Fitch said.

School health leaders say these numbers expect things to return to normal in the cold months near the start of indoor events such as hockey and basketball.

“With these high vaccination levels, the number of cases has also declined fairly rapidly and is now in its current state. Weekly (we) are dropping to very low levels of COVID-91 cases.” Said.
