Police confrontation involving older woman leads to arrest in Girard, Ohio

Girard, Ohio (WKBN) – A man was arrested early Sunday morning after a police standoff involving an elderly woman and child broke out at his home in Girard.

Around 8:30 pm on Saturday night, Girard police received a call about a physical domestic dispute over weapons.

Girard police told reporters at the scene that a woman was in the yard arguing on the phone with the suspect, who was still at home.

It happened on the 200 block of Prospect Street in Girard. Reportedly, the brawl began after the suspect beat the victim for bingeing on cocaine over a two-day period.

Police said the reason for the altercation was that the elderly mother of the woman with dementia was in the back bedroom on the second floor.

The woman and her 6-year-old son were taken to a safe area and a perimeter was set up around the house.

Sergeant Joshua Merrill of the Girard Police Department says they’ve been to the house before.

“We actually have a domestic violence warrant against him from the past,” Sergeant Merrill said.

Sergeant Merrill’s team reached out to the crisis response team when they were unable to make voice contact with an elderly woman at home.

Crisis response team commander John Elberty said their main goal was to force the elderly woman out of her home.

She was found safely and taken for treatment.

Commander Elbati says he believed the suspect was in the attic. From 3 he was deployed with 4 chemical weapons, but without success.

The team searched the apartment next door because they believed the suspect had access to both sides of the duplex. When they searched the other side they found insulation in the floor.

“The dog of Liberty came and had him look for the parts we hadn’t looked at yet, and he alerted us to a hole in the chamber that was actually closed, but before that we had to do the insulation. There was material.A bunch of verbal orders. He didn’t respond to anything so we ended up holed up in the cubicle. He was there but he gave up .

The suspect surrendered peacefully around 1:30 am. The victim had severe bruises and had a nosebleed from the fight.

Additional charges are pending.
