Browns look average as losses increase

Cleveland (AP) —Injuries, and not only your mundane shocks and bruises, but also serious injuries to well-known players, are quickly piled up for the Browns.

So is the loss.

Only six games have passed in the Cleveland season, but I suddenly got lost. The Browns (3-3), chosen to compete with the NFL elite and perhaps compete for the title, are now fairly average overall.

On Sunday, quarterback Baker Mayfield injured his left shoulder again with a 37-14 shelling in the hands of Arizona Cardinals, Kareem Hunt injured a calf and set him aside for a few weeks in Cleveland. Reduced catastrophic 1-2 running back punches to 1 — Nick Chub.

And he is also hurt.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has little time to prepare to play Denver Broncos on Thursday night, with Mayfield, Chub, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., or his first offensive tackle. There is no clear decision as to whether is available.

“I really don’t know, it’s true,” he said.

What has become clear in the last two weeks is that Browns may not be as good as he initially thought. Cleveland has a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, but talent is only part of the game day equation.

The Browns, who lost to the Los Angeles Chargers (4-2) and the Cardinals (6-0) in a row, made too many mistakes to beat the quality team. Defense tends to disrupt communication, but Stefanski seems to be hampered by personnel issues and unable to find the right lampad balance for the attack.

And then there is Mayfield’s injury.

He hasn’t played well since he partially tore his shoulder lips that he hadn’t thrown in the third week. His toughness cannot be denied. Mayfield, wearing a harness to stabilize his sick shoulders, fights very hard to stay on the field.

But his accuracy wasn’t good, and Mayfield, who claims to play against Denver on Thursday night, missed or didn’t see the open receiver at all.

The Browns may hover at around .500 until something goes wrong and the quarterbacks start playing well.

At the end of Sunday, Mayfield said, “My back is hitting a wall,” without moving my arm in a sling.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t shaking.

“No one is flirting so far,” said linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. “We understand what we are in the locker room, the man we are in the locker room, the leadership of Marek Stefanski. We no one flinch in our locker room. I understand that. “

What is working

The lost connection between Mayfield and Beckham was finally sparked. Beckham caught a team high five five pass at 79 yards.

When the two were absorbed in playing 24 yards, Browns fans chanted “OBJ” as if they were begging more.

And while there was some progress on his ongoing field chemistry issues with Mayfield, Beckham didn’t come up with an important force-down catch as the Browns were rallying.

What you need help with

Cleveland’s defenses are in turmoil.

For the second straight week, Browns was pulled away by another bohemian attack, erasing the progress made by coordinator Joe Woods’ unit with a series of powerful performances against Chicago and Minnesota.

The Browns have abandoned 84 points in two games and have had a surprising breakdown in the secondary.

Penalties are also an issue. Browns was asked for four offenses (two pass-interfering calls at the cornerback Denzel Ward and two personal fouls against Malik McDowell in the defensive tackle) on Arizona’s second scoring drive.

Hoard

Donovan Peoples-Jones is becoming more relevant to crimes that lack important parts. He overtook some of Arizona’s little defenders and was in a perfect position to finish the half with the 57-yard Hale Merry TD. This is a play that gave the Browns momentum.

The second year wideout ended with four catches at 101 yards.

Reduce inventory

Injuries are a big problem, but Mayfield has been inconsistent for weeks. His two fumbles on Sunday were the result of him hanging long on the ball when throwing it away was a better option.

He was a gamer who played through some pain, but his erratic performance hurt Browns.

“We had a decent job of caring for the ball until yesterday,” Stefanski said. “We were sometimes a little careless.”

injury

Rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owus Coramore suffers a high ankle sprain against the Cardinals and may head to the disabled list with Hunt. … Stefanski may not know until match time about the tackle situation of Jack Conklin or Jedrick Wills Jr. sitting on Sunday.

Key number

73 — A garden rushing on Sunday without a chub. Cleveland participated in the game on average in the league. The best 187.6 yards per game.

Next step

The short week matched all the injuries, so it may have arrived at the worst possible time. One good thing is that Broncos also slides with three consecutive losses.
