DeWine calls for disaster declaration for tornado-hit counties

Lakeview, Ohio (WDTN) — Gov. Mike DeWine visited Indian Lake on Tuesday to see first-hand the recovery from the devastating March 14 storm.

More than 250 families in Logan County remain in critical need of assistance, and state leaders are asking President Joe Biden for help.

DeWine said the biggest hurdle right now is temporary and long-term housing.

“It's possible some RVs and temporary housing,” the governor said. “There are certain funds that can be launched with the permission of the Legislature and the governor.”

Mr. DeWine is currently seeking a declaration of destruction for the tornado that struck 11 counties and left devastating damage. But he said approval could take months and there was no guarantee a declaration would be made.

“Fortunately, our state is in a good and sound fiscal position, so I think we can quickly deploy and support these funds,” said State Representative John Cross.

A management committee meeting is scheduled within two weeks and is expected to finalize a plan of action.

2 NEWS spoke to a contractor who has been part of the recovery team since day one. He said he doesn't know how long his recovery will take without support.

“True cleanup is to get the lake back to the old lake it was before the damage was done. I think it will take at least another six months, if not longer,” said contractor Jeff Cole. Ta.

State leaders said Ohioans need to take care of themselves and their state at all costs, adding they won't wait to help those in need.
