Shooting at the North Olmsted Giant Eagle

North OlmstedOhio (WJW) – Police are investigating an alleged murder-suicide at the Giant Eagle in North Olmsted on Sunday morning.

Police said they received a call of a gunshot at a store on Lorraine Street just after 9:30 a.m. Police said they had found two bodies on the ground when they arrived.

At an afternoon press conference, police said the two men involved in the incident were previously married but divorced in 2004.

“We don’t believe it was a very amicable divorce, and that’s potentially what led to this divorce,” said North Olmsted Police Chief Bob Wagner.

Police identified the shooter as Edward Smith, 60, of Cleveland, and the victim as Susan Peterson, 63, of Olmsted Township. Police said Peterson was an employee of Giant Eagle and had worked there for about four years.

Police said they were on the scene less than a minute after calling 911 and were grateful that no one else was injured.

“This is not a Steller’s sea eagle problem, it’s not a North Olmsted problem. Incidents like this can happen anywhere, anytime,” Wagner said.

The Giant Eagle was temporarily closed as police investigated the scene. There were 67 employees working at the store at the time, and about 200 customers were inside the store when the shooting occurred, officials said.

“She was very upset,” said Ken Smith. “I think they did a good job of evacuating the employees as quickly and safely as possible, and we have to give them credit for that.”

The Giant Eagle is located at 27264 Lorain Road.
