Fort Wayne, Indiana (WOWO): The Fort Wayne City Council will consider the solid waste resolution and price increase ordinance at its meeting on Tuesday, August 9.

The City of Fort Wayne and the City Council have passed a resolution requiring a portion of the city’s American Rescue Planning Act (ARPA) funds to be used to pay for a qualified solid waste department. A request to the Council calls for securing up to $10 million in ARPA funding. Starting July 1, 2023, an ordinance will be proposed to adjust the household rate for single-family homes from $12 to $15.60.

Full implementation of the rate hike will take effect January 1, 2024, with a fully adjusted $18.60 rate plus annual changes in the consumer price index for all urban consumers, the city’s Solid Waste Fund an additional 1%, and another surcharge applies. A multiplier can also be used based on changes in the Consumer Price Index over the last six months of 2023.

The solid waste rate has remained flat since 2018, according to city officials.
