Remembering the Birthday of the Man Who Was Shot by Columbus Police Officers

Columbus, Ohio (WCMH) – 20 year old family and friends Donovan Lewis In honor of Lewis’ life, they gathered outside Columbus Police Department headquarters on Saturday, the day before Lewis’ 21st birthday, and once again called for justice.

Lewis was shot dead in August 2022. Columbus Police Officer Ricky Anderson while an arrest warrant was issued in the middle of the night.

Lewis’ loved ones want to know why no action was taken against those responsible for his death.

Lewis’ mother Rebecca Durand He said the last seven months have been the hardest of his life, and that on his birthday, which is also Mother’s Day this year, he lost the most important thing in his life.

At Saturday’s wake, many took turns at the mic, shared memories of Lewis and vowed never to stop fighting.

Durand and Lewis’ two-month-old son was never seen, but was present at the wake on Saturday.

“It’s heartbreaking for me not to be able to celebrate 21 years with him and celebrate my first Mother’s Day without the whole family,” Durand said. “I am lucky to be still here.

Ben Cooper said, “No world will stop this family from seeking justice for Donovan.” Attorney representing Lewis’ family. “And while it’s frustrating, infuriating and unfair how long this family has to wait, their resolve is strong.”

Back in January, Lewis’ family wrongful death litigation against multiple Columbus police officers, including Anderson. The family continues to call on city leaders to take action in response to the incident and to prevent future incidents like Lewis’s.

The family, along with other families in similar situations, are planning a march on the Ohio State Capitol next Saturday.
