Crew Edge Atlanta United Extends Undefeated Consecutive Wins

Columbus Crew defeated host Atlanta United 1-0 on Saturday, extending their undefeated streak to six games, with Jonathan Mensah scoring in the 65th minute and goalkeeper Eloy Room scoring five saves.

The crew (6-3-6, 24 points) has been 2-0-4 since their defeat in Philadelphia on June 23, but the room has been shut out in a row to give five people to the season.

Atlanta (2-5-8, 14 points) haven’t won in the last 10 games (3-0-7) after defeating CF MontrĂ©al on May 15.

Mencer scored the first goal of the season after the crew took advantage of Lucas Serrarayan’s corner kick flicked on Marlon Hairston’s left post. Mensah was in the correct post in the header.

Serrarayan, who leads the crew with 5 goals, did not start and entered in the 46th minute. He cared for a tight hamstring and played for the third time in eight days.

The room removed Atlanta from the board in the 36th minute and rejected Erik Lopez. Erik Lopez seemed to sneak open on the right side.

In the 42nd minute, Lopez fired a straight shot from the top of the penalty area saved by the room.

Marcelino Moreno’s bending strike had a stretch save on the right side, and in the 58th minute he returned to the room.

This was Atlanta United’s interim coach Rob Valentino’s first home game after the dismissal of first-year coach Gabriel Einze on July 18. Atlanta drew one-on-one at FC Cincinnati on Wednesday.

The game was played in front of more than 67,000 spectators at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the first time since before COVID-19 in March 2020.

Atlanta striker Josef Martinez started for the first time since playing for 90 minutes on May 29th. He joined Venezuela in Copa America and tested positive for COVID-19.

When he became healthy again, his relationship with Heinze deteriorated and he did not start his last match.
