The Chicago Cubs have signed a deal to make Cleveland’s longtime executive Carter Hawkins the next general manager, Athletic and MLB.com reported Wednesday.
Hawkins, 37, has spent the last 14 seasons with Indians and has recently been an assistant GM. He started as an intern at the Cleveland front office.
Hawkins will fill a position that has been open for almost a year since Jed Hoyer was promoted to president of baseball operations.
When he was hired, Hawkins reportedly defeated a short list of candidates, including Carlos Rodriguez of Tampa Bay Rays, assistant GM Jeremysol of Minnesota, and James Harris, vice president of player development at Cleveland. Probably.
Hawkins was promoted to Assistant GM by Indians in 2016.
