Dayton-based musician pays tribute to frontline Ukrainian soldiers

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Two Dayton-based folk musicians spent several weeks in Ukraine, two miles from the front lines of the war. Besides playing music for soldiers, they raised thousands of dollars to deliver medical supplies.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Ohio natives Brett Hill (aka Brother Hill) and Benja Stewart began working for the Ohio With Love campaign. Since then, their shows have raised thousands of dollars to support soldiers, but this time the musicians have brought concerts to soldiers fighting on the front lines.

Musician Brett Hill said, “Music turned out to be more important and influential than I thought.

By creating cultural solidarity through traditional folk music, Hill aims to clear up misconceptions others may have about Ukraine and its people. He says he’s a yes, self-aware, modern and normal person.

“There is a huge psychological component to this. Medicine is what we are here to deliver, but feeling through music is one of the most valuable and what we as musicians Benya and I do. It’s the most valuable thing you can bring,” Hill said.

Brett says seeing the soldiers firsthand gave new meaning to their determination.

“In the eyes of many of my friends there and the soldiers on the front lines who are as determined as ever, it’s a war that can still be won,” Hill said.

In total, the musicians raised over $66,000 to purchase tourniquets and advanced hemostasis kits, all sent to Ukrainian soldiers. Hill and Stewart began organizing statewide shows throughout his Ohio campaign with love when war broke out after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
