Tata Motors announced on October 4, 2021 that it will announce a brand new mini SUV, the Tata Punch. After the announcement, Tata will begin booking the smallest SUV ever. Diwali. Exhibited at the 2020 Auto Expo as a near-production H2X concept, the Punch is the second Tata model after the Altroz, which is based on the company’s new era ALFA architecture. Punch is the most affordable SUV from Tata Motors, slotting under Nexon in the company’s SUV range.
The Tata Punch inherits the upright stance of the H2X concept, a sturdy front end and a muscular wheel arch. These elements will surely captivate SUV lovers. Some teasers shared online in the last few days have also confirmed that the punch retains some of the styling clues found in the H2X concept, including funky taillights.
Like the outside, the Tata Punch reflects the H2X concept on the inside, omitting some of the elements of the concept car. The Punch dashboard has an upright block look with a two-tone gray and ivory theme. Many of the elements in the punch have been taken over from Altroz, including the digital instrument clusters, steering wheel and climate control switches that are part of it. We also borrowed a floating 7.0-inch Harman touchscreen infotainment system from Altroz.
The Tata Punch is expected to be offered only in the form of gasoline, but with a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated engine option (found in Tiago, Tigor and Altros) and a turbocharged engine option (Altros). Tata HBX gearbox options may include 5-speed manual and automatic manual transmissions. There is no diesel option, but it is understood that Tata is developing an all-electric version of the punch for the future.
For now, it’s unlikely that Tatapunch has a direct rival, and the closest models are the Martis Suzuki Ignis and the long-forgotten Mahindra KUV100. That said, Hyundai is developing its own mini SUV (codenamed AX1) and will arrive in India next year. The price of Tata Punch is expected to be in the range of 5 to 7.5 rupees (in front of the showroom).
