Ohio University hockey coach Lionel Moron named 2023 Coach of the Year and Luc Lieb named both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year

Lionel Moron, head coach of Ohio University’s hockey team, has been named 2023 Coach of the Year by the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). This well-deserved recognition is awarded to the top coaches in the Men’s Division I League, as voted by the ACHA Men’s Division I Head Coaches. Moron is his third coach from Ohio to win the award, following Dan Morris and Craig McCarthy, who won in 2004 and his 1998 respectively.

A native of Lausanne, Switzerland, Moron just finished his third season at Ohio University and his second season as head coach, which has had a major impact on the team’s success. Moron’s on-ice experience has undoubtedly shaped his coaching expertise and allowed him to provide valuable insights to players.

Under Moron’s guidance, the Bobcats had a great season, going 30-6-2. Their outstanding performances secured him a spot in the ACHA Men’s Division I National Tournament for the 31st time in the team’s history, maintaining a winning streak of 30 consecutive appearances. The Bobcats won his first two games in the tournament and advanced to the semifinals for his second straight season.

The Bobcats also won the Central States College Eight Hockey League (CSCHL) regular season championship. The record ties Iowa State for the most championships in CSCHL history. For his efforts, Moron also won his CSCHL Coach of the Year Award.

In addition to Moron’s award, the Ohio University team has another reason. His freshman from Kingston, Ontario, Luc Reeve was named the 2022-2023 ACHA Men’s Division 1 Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year. Reeve becomes the first bobcat player to win Rookie of the Year and his fourth bobcat player to win Player of the Year. He is also the fourth player in the division to win both titles in his career. Lieb’s outstanding performances throughout the season contributed to the team’s success and earned him these prestigious honors.

He emerged as the team’s top scorer, scoring 75 points with 34 goals and 41 assists. Lieb’s influence extended beyond his regular season and made valuable contributions post his season, including his two goals and his one assist in the national competition. Reeve also represented Canada at the 2023 Hockey World Cup.
