Rallies Gather in Belmont County Against Ohio Issue 1

Belmont County, Ohio – We’re just weeks away from the August special election that could change the way Ohio makes policy.

“This is a big problem, and I’m very concerned that many Ohioans don’t know there’s an election, they don’t know there’s an election, and they think there’s only one problem,” said Jen Miller, executive director of the Ohio Women’s Voters League. So they could leave it alone. ”

A local coalition of Belmont County united to vote against the much-anticipated No. 1. They argue that if the issue is passed, it will rob them of majority votes on various policies in the state. Instead, the 60% threshold must be met to pass the policy. The coalition says it believes the issue will affect many unions and affect every right Ohioans have earned.

John Sanders of the Eastern Steel Workers Union of Ohio said: This is a matter of majority voting. Labor falls under that guideline, but it’s all about what people have fought wars for to get a simple majority, and those things in the past. We ask people to defend this simple majority. ”

The coalition claims that if the issue is passed, it will completely change the face of future voting in Ohio.

UMWA coordinator David Dilley added: “We are trying to abolish the two-party system. Our two-party system is the system that has worked.” So it’s frustrating for us to figure out why they want to change it. And what is the motivation behind it? ”

Jen Miller of the Ohio League of Women Voters said the issue also has several clauses that make it extremely difficult for the state to pass policy.

“Achieving the 60% threshold means that very few people can block what Ohioans want every day. There’s even a signature clause there that requires signatures from 88 counties. This means one county can block an initiative that all 87 other counties want. This is fundamentally anti-democratic,” Miller said.

Meanwhile, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, the number one supporter, is encouraging voters to vote yes. LaRose said she believed in the issue and had a personal right to encourage people to vote for it. Ohio Right to Live President Mike Gonidakis also said that if we want to defend our values, we must defend the Constitution and vote YES on No. 1.
