Gateway Film Center Reopens for Memorial Day

And the world slowly returns towards that vague memory we call normal. What new evidence do you have? How about a big Memorial Day weekend in the movie?

Historically, this was the weekend Hollywood saw as the beginning of a blockbuster season. You can rely on big-budget superhero movies, perhaps Disney movies, and perhaps the kick-off of a crunchy horror franchise. It’s not 2020. However, 2021 looks more promising, especially as the Gateway Film Center will reopen normally in time for the holiday weekend.

Yes, the movie center will resume normal operations on Thursday, May 27th.

“Many of us remember going to the movies on Memorial Day,” says GFC President and Programmer Chris Hamel. “From a health and safety perspective, we felt the situation was going in the right direction for the last few months. It felt like the right combination. People really wanted to go back to the movie center. It’s safe to go back to normal programming. “

Hamel hasn’t rushed things yet. He states that GFC still requires social distance, masks in public places, and continues to limit screen capacity to 50%. However, all screens will open.

“We know the audience is excited to return to Screening Room 8,” he says.

The planned program is a combination of blockbuster, indie cuisine and retrospective exhibitions. How did Hamel decide what to screen?

“First and foremost, it took me about a year to plan and think about how I wanted to come back,” he says. “There are movies that appeal to the masses. I have a favorite film festival that I’ve been waiting for for a long time to bring to Columbus. And one of the things people really like about film centers is” from the collection. Is to do these things called. It may be something you haven’t seen in a long time, something you haven’t seen, or something you haven’t seen on a big screen. “

Disney’s big title at the opening Cruella And the sequel to horror Quiet Place II, While Evil dead (1981) and 4K restoration The silence of the sheep (1991) Represents a movie from the collection. One of the festival’s favorites this weekend is a fun G-rated documentary about pigs, cows and one-legged chickens. Gunda.

“One of the things I think is really important to the Columbus audience is Gunda It’s finally coming, “says Hamel. “I’m really lucky to be able to bring it to Columbus.”

Hamel is also planning two retrospective exhibitions. One is the Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao. Her three characteristics, The song my brother taught me (2015), rider (2017) and Nomads (2020) will be screened alongside the filmmaker’s early short films.

“I think we’re one of the few venues in the country that actually screened all of her films,” says Hamel. “But she also has a collection of short films. Anyone who wants to see her growth as a filmmaker has the opportunity to see them in shorts blocks.”

Another retrospective covers the features and shorts of the Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon.

“I love Cartoon Saloon movies,” says Hamel. Kells Secret (2009), Sea song (2014), Earner (2017), and last year’s Oscar candidate Wolfwalker.. “It’s very noteworthy that the studio has four features, but they’re all so great.”

The lineup also includes blocks of animator shorts.

“This is a great program, and it’s a great program for all ages,” continues Hamel.

This isn’t the end of a short pairing inspired by.Pedro Almodóvar’s long-awaited short Human voice Starring Tilda Swinton will be screened with his 1988 Jewels A woman on the verge of memory weakness.

“Almodóvar is one of the greatest living filmmakers,” Hamel declares. “Tilda Swinton is one of my favorite living actors. I’m really excited. Human voice I’m actually in Columbus. It worked through good timing and some really big beggars.Only 30 minutes but based on the same subject A woman on the verge of memory weakness.. Many haven’t seen it and don’t understand how remarkable and incredible it is. Don’t miss the chance to see it in the cinema. “

Excavated George Romero (amusement park), And Mads Mikkelsen 2 Far (Riders of Justice And Another round).

“I think most people I know love Mads Mikkelsen, so why don’t you let people watch the two Mads Mikkelsen movies?” Hamel asks. “We really deserve it after 2020.”
