Get to know Jackson Carman

Michael Lapraca

The Bengals got help from the attack line on Friday when they chose Jackson Carman, a former Clemson left tackle, in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. Here are five things you need to know about the latest Bengals blockers:

Welcome back

Carman is a local player who lives near Fairfield, Ohio. As a senior at Fairfield High School, Carman was a finalist at both the Anthony Muñoz National Offensive Lineman of the Year Award and the USA Today Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Frenzy recruitment

Carman signed Clemson in December 2017, completing one of the most publicly announced recruitment journeys to screen over 40 scholarship offers. He was ranked No. 1 Offensive Lineman in the United States in the 247 Sports Composite Ranking and No. 1 in Ohio regardless of position.

Better and better

At Clemson, Carman registered early and played 13 games as a backup left tackle for the 2018 national champion. He was promoted to the starting lineup as a sophomore, started all 15 games and won the All-ACC honor of the third team in his play. Carman improved to All-ACC for the second team after starting all 12 games with a left tackle.

History book remake

Carman is the best Clemson attack lineman drafted in quite some time. Joe Bostic of the Tigers was the third round of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1979, the overall pick No. 64. Only the other two Clemson attack linemen were higher. Dave Thompson was 30th, the first pick of the Detroit Lions’ second round in 1971. Harold Olson was also the first pick in the second round by the Cardinals in 1960, ten years before the NFL / AFL. Merger, when there were only 12 teams.

tea time

On the first day of the draft, Bengals reunited LSU teammate Quarterback Joe Burrow with wide receiver Jammer Chase. In the second round, Bengals replayed the reunion game between Carman and his former Clemson teammate Tee Higgins. In 2019 Higgins and Carman led Clemson to the National Championship as a full-time starter, where they fell to Barrow, Chase and LSU Tigers.
