Google paid a fine of over 32 million rubles this year, significantly reducing the number of posts banned in Moscow, the company and Russia said.

Russia has fined Alphabet’s Google RUB 9 million (about 913,000 rupees), a Moscow court said Tuesday. Moscow has increased pressure on foreign tech companies this year with a campaign characterized by critics as an attempt by authorities to take more control over the Internet. They say they threaten to curb the freedom of individuals and businesses. Google When Meta Both platforms (formerly Facebook) faced a lawsuit this month for repeatedly violating Russian law on content and could be fined a percentage of their annual revenue in Russia.

The Tagansky District Court in Moscow said on Tuesday that Google had been fined a total of 9 million rubles in three separate administrative litigations for not removing the content. The court quoted a law stating that this could include posts involving radical activities, child pornography, or promotion of substance use. Google didn’t immediately respond to the request for comment. Google paid a fine of over 32 million rubles this year, significantly reducing the number of posts banned in Moscow, the company and Russia said.

Russia has slowed Twitter since March as a penalty for not removing banned content. Twitter does not allow you to use that platform to promote illegal activity.read more

Moscow also demanded that by January 1, 13 foreign and mostly US technology companies would be established in Russia or face restrictions or total bans.

On Monday, state communications regulator Roskomnadzor said slowing and blocking services were seen as a last resort to the crime.
