Anti-Semitic threat at the University of Akron

Akron Ohio (WJW) – The University of Akron has confirmed it is investigating a student accused of making anti-Semitic threats in a social media conversation with a Florida Jewish woman.

The accusations were first revealed by a grassroots anti-Semitic organization in New York City.

“We were anonymously tipped off via direct message on Instagram about this young man’s anti-Semitic threat, and shortly thereafter confirmed the information and his comments to be true before posting about anti-Semitism. -Jewish threats to Twitter and Instagram handles,” said Liora Rez, from Solon, who heads the organization stopantisemism.org.

The student, who was not charged with any crime as of Tuesday, is accused of writing “I want to kill the Zionists who have been killing my people for 75 years.”

In an audio file attached to the post, he is said to have said in Arabic, “I’m going to kill those horrible people you call Zionists.”

Rez said the student deleted her Instagram account and deleted almost all content on her Facebook account shortly after her organization posted the comment on its social media accounts.

The head of the American Jewish Commission in Cleveland is also aware of the accusations and is pleased that the University of Akron is taking them seriously.

“Even if these offensive comments were made on private social media accounts, the University of Akron should be concerned that one of its students threatened violence against Jews. They are investigating,” Lee C. Shapiro said. “At a time when campus anti-Semitism has reached alarming levels nationwide, schools must redouble their efforts to ensure that Jewish students are safe and free from intimidation, and anti-Semitic incidents must be addressed. must be unequivocally condemned.”

Rez said her organization has also filed a complaint with police and the FBI in Tallmadge, where the student lives.

FOX 8 spoke with Tallmadge Police Chief Ronald Williams, but could not confirm Tuesday that his agency has a record of the complaint.

“It’s very nasty, it’s very scary. Anti-Semitism is on the rise in America,” Rez said. “We don’t want the empty words of accusation for lack of action that we hear so often from university administrators. We are demanding that the university expel him from the campus.”
