Gilmour’s Weybrecht wins individual title at home – News-Herald

At the Paul Primor Invitational in Gilmore, puddles of mud and standing water didn’t deter the runners as they entered the starting box.

The course conditions didn’t do the runners any favors, but some put in strong results, with Lancers’ Amy Weibrecht never winning the Blue Division women’s race.

The sophomore did well out of the box and saw her lead continue to grow as the race progressed. made a difference.

It was her second win of the season and continued her streak of top three finishes of the season.

“It was a really good race. It’s fun to run in the race on Friday afternoon,” said Weybekt. “Also, the presentation was really cool. I have people I know who are rooting for me. Especially when it comes to running on his home course, it’s easy to zone out, so I had to think tactically.”

Also, Lancers senior Claire Valenza finished fourth (20:35.2) and Anna Gonser finished 20th (22:31.3), leading the Lancers to a third-place team finish.

The closest competition of the day was in the Blue division, with Beaumont’s Alexa McDade and Holy Name Frances Popick in 14th place.

The two were evenly matched from the opening shots. Once they got into the truck they kept swapping places. However, the advantage was given to the Blue Streaks runner and she beat Popik by 0.3 seconds.

As she considers herself a track runner, the finish fell into McDade’s hands, which helped in the end.

“I’m competitive and I could hear my father yelling that he was right behind you,” McDade said. It’s been inspiring and even as a senior I’ve been enjoying the last few races before the season is over.”

The men’s race from 5th to 13th also had a crazy dash to the finish. Included among them was Troy Federici of the North.

Despite missing the lead group, Federici dominated the field behind and finished 10th.

Junior continues with three consecutive finishes in the top 20, including a 17:03.7.

“Seeing them makes me want to run harder,” Federici said. “I didn’t think much about what I was running or the actual final standings. A run like today really pushes me. I feel like I need to push. It’s been going well so far this season.”

In the Blue Division men’s race, the Lancers maintained their penchant for fast attacks and defense from there. As a result, sophomore he finished in the top 20 with his two runners, Joseph Salerno his 13th and Scott Vergilii his 16th.

Both were fans of the course addition and familiarity with it.

“A fast start helps a lot in the second half of the race,” said Salerno. “If it starts to go down, we can still be at the front. It allows us to stay better.”

Vergilii adds: We run this course all the time and are used to the layout. We’re used to it, including when adding conditions. Combine the two and you’ll get more places at a later time. ”
