Public comments on proposed noise ordinance reveal industry responsible for most complaints

Ohio County, Ohio (WTRF) – The Ohio County Commissioner held a meeting Tuesday evening seeking public comment on a proposed noise ordinance for unincorporated and suburban areas of the county.

Officials brought up the idea for the ordinance in August after residents of suburban Ohio County brought issues involving excessive noise to the attention of the commission. It appeared to be about evenly divided on the , with many lining up, discussing the noise from their ATVs.

But one particular issue came up so often that it was brought up directly by Commission Chairman Randy Wharton.

“One thing that has become very clear to me is that the majority of the complaints I hear are virtually all industry related: the gas industry, the coal industry, trucks on the road. So, I haven’t made up my mind on this yet, but to answer your question and to answer your question, I don’t support ordinances that don’t include them.

Randy Wharton, Ohio County Commissioner

Wharton added he doesn’t know how adding industry to the ordinance will ultimately play out in court. If so, the commissioners would need to actually listen to what residents consider to be a public nuisance.
