Shooting suspect Jamya Brooks must face trial in Isiah Helms’ death in Youngstown, Ohio: Court

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The 2022 shooting suspect has been ruled eligible for trial.

Judge Maureen Sweeney ruled today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court after a 30-minute hearing against 19-year-old Jamiyah Brooks.

Brooks is accused of the January 2022 shooting. Isaiah Helms, 22 years old.

Helms’ body was found on February 2, 2022, in a cemetery on Liberty Road and Wardle Avenue. Helms was last seen early on January 30, 2022, while getting into a car in the parking lot of the Plaza View Apartment Complex.

Police have not disclosed a motive for Helms’ death or how they obtained information about where to look for him.

Brooks was found to be incompetent in December and was placed in a mental health facility in Heartland to restore his abilities.

Assistant prosecutor Patrick Fenning said Hartland told the court on March 3 that Brooks had regained his capacity and was able to help defend himself.

Heartland’s Dr. James Pontau testified via Zoom that he had listened to a tape of a phone call that Brooks had received while he was in the county jail, so he could tell that Brooks understood his rights.

He also shows that he can help defend himself because he understands his rights, Pontau said.

A trial date has not yet been set for Brooks, but a pretrial hearing is set for April 11.
