Minor earthquake hits near West Virginia-Ohio border, no damage

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (WOWK) — The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) said no damage was reported after a minor earthquake struck near the Ohio-West Virginia border.

A magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck the area at around 4:54 pm Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The location of the epicenter was recorded at coordinates 38.903N, 82.040W near Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

According to the USGS, 0.1-kilometer-deep tremors were also detected in the following areas:

  • Cheshire, Ohio
  • Athens, Ohio
  • Tees Valley, West Virginia
  • parkersburg, west virginia
  • Charleston, West Virginia

13 News also contacted 911 in Gallia County, Ohio, and a dispatcher said there were no reports of residents feeling the tremors or suffering damage from the earthquake.

According to WVDEP, no damages have been claimed, but citizens can call the statewide spill hotline at 1-800-642-3074 to report environmental problems, regardless of the cause.
