Jack Hannah diagnosed with dementia

Jack Hannah was diagnosed with dementia and is now considered Alzheimer’s disease. Hannah’s three daughters announced in a letter released Wednesday afternoon.

Hannah — the 74-year-old honorary director of the internationally renowned khaki-loving Columbus Zoo Aquarium — has been in the public eye for over 40 years to put Columbus and its zoo conservation efforts on the national stage. I did.

Hannah’s daughters, Kathleen, Sae Yamamoto, and Julie, now say that his condition has deteriorated so badly in the past few months that his father cannot participate in public life as he once did.

“The passion for wildlife conservation and education was at the heart of who our dad was and everything he achieved with the help of so many people,” Hannas wrote. I am. “He lived a life connecting people and wildlife because he always believed that letting people see and experience animals was the key to engaging in more influential conservation efforts.”

Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Hannah raised exotic animals in her father’s home, called Hannah’s Ark. In 1978, he became the director of Columbus Zoo. Conservation efforts on the map.

Hannah’s popularity grew as he worked on the go, from the classroom to the “Midnight with David Letterman” set. In 2018, on Hannah’s calendar, he traveled 220 days a year. Millions of households are also paying attention to one of Hannah’s weekly television shows (Animal Adventure, Into the Wild, Wild Countdown, etc.) to bring animal protection to their living room.

The Columbus Zoo Aquarium is now home to more than 10,000 animals, spans 588 acres and attracted 2.3 million visitors last year.

“It’s an understatement to say that we’re proud enough of our dad,” Hannas writes.

“My dad’s health is deteriorating rapidly, but his great sense of humor continues to shine,” writes Hannah’s daughters. “Yes. He is still wearing khaki at home.”
