Mary Wallace Funk, an 82-year-old pilot who was prevented from becoming an astronaut in the 1960s because of gender, joined Jeff Bezos in his rocket carrier’s first human flight into space, and the company Announced on Thursday.

On July 20, she joins Bezos. His brother, Mark Bezos. The company said in a statement that it won the auction as the first person to fly with a Blue Origin rocket and capsule. The mission is a short suborbital flight, in which the rocket rises above the 62-mile threshold, commonly considered the beginning of space, before returning to Earth.

Passengers on a rocket called New Shepard experience weightlessness for four minutes before landing in the desert of western Texas, where the rocket launches.

Funk, passing by Wally, was one of 13 American women who underwent a rigorous astronaut training program in the 1960s to determine if a woman was suitable for space. No one became an astronaut, despite testing like a man at the time. This program was privately funded and was not approved by NASA. More importantly, according to History.com, NASA accepted only trained fighter pilots (jobs available only to men) as candidates to become astronauts at the time. Until 1983, five years after the fighter pilot requirement was lifted, the United States sent the first woman, Sally Ride, into space.

“They told me I did better than anyone else and got the job done faster,” Funk said in a video posted on Bezos’ Instagram account. But in each of the four times she told NASA she wanted to be an astronaut, she was rejected.

“They said,’Well, you’re a girl, you can’t do that,'” she recalled in the video. “I said:’What do you guess? It doesn’t matter what you are, if you want it, you can still do it. And I did everyone I like to do things that never happen. “

Blue Origin refused to arrange an interview with Funk on Thursday through a spokesperson.

Funk was the first female Federal Aviation Administration inspector and the first female National Transportation Safety Board aviation safety inspector. And on New Shepard’s flight later this month, she opens up yet another path and becomes the oldest man to fly into space.

“No one was waiting any longer,” Bezos wrote in the Instagram caption. “It’s time. Welcome to the crew, Wally. Thank you for visiting us as an honorable guest on July 20th.”
