Lima — Lima’s Sixth Ward Assemblyman, Delhi Glen, wants Lima to know more about the iconic black politician John Lewis.
Glenn hosted a brief press conference in the city hall’s council room on Monday, announcing details of the Second Annual Congressman John Lewis Awards Day. The event is set for Sunday, February 27th.
Lewis, who died on July 17, 2020 at the age of 80, was a disciple of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was widely known as the chairman of the Student Nonviolence Coordination Committee. In that role, Lewis helped lead a march stopped by police violence at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965. This is a milestone in the civil rights movement that has become known as “Blood Sunday.”
Glenn’s respect for Lewis, his long and passionate political career, and his life’s work, civil rights, were evident on Monday.
“(Lewis) was a pioneer and a pioneer. I want to put his legacy (there) and continue it in our community. We have a new season and new growth. We’re doing it. Let’s grow and do it, “Glen said.
A symbol of civil rights and a former Georgia representative, he will be honored at an event at the Veterans Memorial Civic Center in Lima at 5 pm on Sunday. Chelsea Clark, a candidate for Secretary of State of Ohio, will be the keynote speaker.
Clark is from Lima and graduated from Elida High School in 2003. She is currently serving her second term as a city council member in Forest Park, a suburb of Cincinnati.
Glenn said he inspired Clark after Lewis met and took a picture of him.
“She talks about her relationship with Congressman Lewis and how that influenced her quest to secure voting rights for all Ohio citizens,” said Clark’s mother, Regina Freeman. “It’s what we’re still finding fighting for ourselves, which I can’t believe, but we work hard. We support I want to see his voting rights bill upheld in Congress. “
The event will be attended by several local leaders planning lectures and will be awarded awards.
Tickets for attending the Sunday event are $ 10 and can be paid at the door.
