Ohio’s $4 billion in unclaimed funds: Here’s how to find out

cleveland — (WJW) — Ohio Department of Commerce Unclaimed Funds Division Approximately $4 billion worth of funds are awaiting collection.

“The average bill last year was $3,000, which is unbelievable,” said Outreach Manager Susie Wagner.

Perhaps even more incredible is the huge number of unclaimed funds, lost or forgotten funds from inactive accounts, waiting to be claimed. In Wednesday’s webinar, Wagner encouraged people not to wait to collect the missing money.

“We have close to $4 billion right now, and we’re trying to get it back into the hands of the people of Ohio,” Wagner said. “Everyone has access to extra cash these days.”

Initial claims are made relatively quickly, but it can take several months for payments to be made, and the department is working to improve this process.

“We hired more people who were working overtime,” Wagner said.

He said the system will be upgraded and details of the changes and their impact on the claims review process will be announced at a later date.

“We processed approximately 40,000 claims and paid out a total of $139 million last year alone,” Wagner said.

The money is just waiting for Ohioans and businesses to come together.

“Currently, 13,000 claims are under review,” she said. “We alone receive thousands of claims every week. We are running a special promotion this month to get the word out. We are averaging 10,000 claims a week, which is very exciting and we are It’s everything you want.”

Mr Wagner warned that there is no fee to make a claim and that it is illegal for people to ask for money to claim unclaimed funds.
