At this year’s tournament, three Americans, the smallest team since returning to the Olympics in 2002, were nominated for skeletons.
Currently, there are six US Olympic women’s skeleton teams. Katie Woolender made five of them.
Uhlaender became the first American woman to officially form five Olympic teams from sliding sports after being nominated on Saturday for a team of three heading to the Beijing Olympics.
This is the smallest team skeleton-nominated by Americans since the sport returned to the Olympic program in 2002 after a break that lasted more than half a century. Two Olympic rookies will join the Woolender. Kelly Curtis on the female side and Andrew Brother, the only male qualifier.
They heard the word on Saturday morning at a team meeting in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This is the venue for the World Cup skeleton and bobsleigh finals this weekend.
“USA Bobsleigh and Skeleton are incredibly proud of the three athletes named to represent Team USA at the 2022 Olympics,” said Aaron McGuire, CEO of USABS. “It was a battle to build a team and it was the last race.”
The final race of the World Cup season was Friday morning and there was a race during the race. Three American women competed for two Olympic spots, all with a realistic chance to form a team.
Woolender had the best odds, followed by Megan Henry and Curtis. They needed a race of her life to get to Beijing.
And that’s exactly what she got.
Curtis has finished his career best six to conclude his first full season at the World Cup circuit. This was enough to make Henry a slight leap in the system the United States was using to determine the spot. Henry was 15th in the finale.
Here’s one way to explain how close it was. Curtis finished two runs on Saturday in 2 minutes 18.87 seconds. To Beijing.
After the announcement of the USA Luge’s eight-man team earlier this week, three skeleton athletes have been nominated, bringing the total number of US sliders selected at the Beijing tournament to eleven. All that remains is the USA bobsleigh. USA Bobsleigh will announce the Olympic team by Monday.
