Cleveland toddler spends first Christmas at home after rare life-saving surgery

cleveland (WJW) – He has defied the odds since day one.

Deangelo Blake, Jr., or DJ, was born prematurely on January 18, 2020. Sadly, his twin did not survive.

Something still wasn’t right when DJ left the hospital weighing just 2 pounds, 6 ounces.

“They said he had a heart murmur and all premature babies have a heart murmur, but I wasn’t ready to accept that answer,” said his mother, Daniel Edmonds. said.

Daniel got a second opinion at the Cleveland Clinic and underwent a grim diagnosis. DJ was born with a defective heart that prevented blood from properly flowing to his heart and lungs.

“Simply put, the two aortas coming out of the heart do not come out of each ventricle, but they both come out of one ventricle on the right,” says Hani Nazim, Ph.D., a congenital heart surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic. says.

Dr. Najm created a 3D version of the DJ’s heart to better explain what to expect from Danielle.

He is also the youngest patient ever to undergo a ventricular switch to repair his heart.

“He was small in size, but not only that, but he got sick on a ventilator. He had never breathed on his own since he was born, so that made it even more complicated,” Dr. Najm said. say.

“He brought my baby back to me, just as I asked. He didn’t die.

In just five months, DJ was finally released in May after nine hours of surgery and 484 days in the hospital. His send-off at the clinic was an emotional one.

“Thank you for not just a job. You love us not only as patients, but as family. We made a family out of the Cleveland Clinic,” said Danielle.
