Longtime ONU councilor James Rail Kennedy dies

ADA — Dr. James Rail Kennedy, the great-grandson of Ohio Northern University founder Henry Solomon Lehr, died on February 15 at his home in Columbus. The university confirmed on Wednesday.

Kennedy served on the university’s board of directors for 23 years and eventually became a member of ONU’s donation community, earning an honorary doctorate from the university in 2017.

Kennedy was the main benefactor of the university’s new engineering building, named after him.

Outside of ONU, Kennedy established three companies: 21st Century Communications, Next Future, LLC, and Crystal Remembrance to develop the industry standard for disaster alert systems, according to a press release from an Ohio Northern source.

Kennedy holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the College of Wooster, a master’s degree in business and economics from Ohio State University, and has been teaching economics for 12 years.

The university recognizes Kennedy’s legacy, celebrating 150 years since his great-grandfather founded ONU in 1871.
