Burn ban in Ohio now in effect: What you need to know

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) — March 1st is not only one day closer to spring, it’s also the first day of Ohio’s spring burning ban.

Ohio’s burn ban was established nearly 70 years ago to protect property, the environment, and lives. A burning ban in effect from March 1 to May 31 prevents outdoor fires that can quickly get out of control.

“Most people don’t know that Ohio has a spring fire season,” said Greg Guess, fire program manager and ODNR Forestry Division Deputy Director. “As we enter the spring season, we ask Ohioans to increase their awareness of the risks of outdoor burning and be aware of seasonal regulations. Doing so will help keep Ohio wildland fire free in 2024. You can protect it.”

Ohio law prohibits most open burning in unincorporated areas between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. in March, April, May, October, and November. This includes burning garden waste, trash and debris, even in a suitable combustion barrel.

These particular months are “particularly susceptible” to wildfires because vegetation is dry and winds are strong.

The ODNR Forest Service shares safety tips when burning debris outdoors.

  • Be aware of current and future weather conditions, have tools and water on hand, and never leave a debris fire unattended.
  • Get information about state and local burning regulations – local ordinances supersede state bans
  • Please contact your local fire department for additional information and safety precautions.
  • visit Ohio Department of Forestry Website and firewise.org See more tips to protect your home and community
  • Consider safe alternatives to debris disposal, such as composting
  • For incineration during unrestricted hours, set up a closed incinerator using a 55-gallon drum and a weighted screen lid.
  • Remember: “Only you can prevent wildfires!”

If your fire escape becomes uncontrollable or a wildfire occurs, contact your local fire department immediately.
