Columbus Junction — A proposal was submitted to the city council on Wednesday to expand the amount of funding Columbus Junction currently provides to fund the position of Secretary-General of the Luisa Development Group.
Mayor Mark Houston said he and councilor Frank Best had recently attended the meeting and the proposal had been announced to them, Wapero city officials and other local leaders.
The position is already funded through a partnership between LDGs, but Louisa County; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Louisa County; Nine integrated cities in Louisa County, Best, new proposals to Wapello and Columbus Junction He said he demanded more financial support for them.
He said the two cities would each raise their support to about $ 10,000 if they agreed. Currently, each municipality in the partnership offers about $ 1 per person, and the two large communities each cost about $ 2,000. This extension provides office space, financial support, and other support.
The increased support from the city will help find and maintain the Executive Secretary, Best said. Former LDG Executive Director Angela Shipley resigned a few weeks ago after accepting her position as planner in Burlington. She was initially hired as LDG Executive Director in January 2018.
Since its founding in 2004, several other directors have held that position. Best said additional support from two large communities in the county would help keep someone.
“(It) will help to welcome the director there and keep someone a little longer than a few years,” he told the rest of the council, adding that the community would benefit from that position.
“LDG is doing a lot for this county and our community,” he said, pointing out grant applications, downtown revitalization, and other programs.
If the new proposal is finally approved, the new Executive Director will be based in Wapero’s extended office, but is expected to hold regular business hours at Columbus Junction.
Houston said the proposal would be on the agenda for action at the council’s next meeting on 13 January.
In other actions, the council approved a renewed regional risk mitigation plan for multiple jurisdictions in Louisa County. According to city officials, the plan, created in 2007 and last updated in 2012, is needed for local communities to request federal disaster relief.
The council also learned that the city’s $ 271,200 water meter replacement project was nearly complete. Public works staff Jeff Voname told the council that only a few residential water meters need to be replaced with the new radio reading model.
Meanwhile, authorities have shown that water measurements from the new meter are more consistent with the amount of water being treated at the city’s water facilities. When the replacement project was approved earlier this year, authorities said they wanted the new meter to provide more accurate water measurements.
Higher readings may mean that the city’s income will increase to help pay for new meters.
The council also held a private session to discuss the proceedings being dealt with by local attorney Tim Wink, who had previously told the council that he would retire at the end of December.
Houston said the city would ask Wink’s legal partner, Jay Schweizer, to take over the proceedings following Wink’s retirement after a private meeting.
