Lumber hosting the first MLS Cup after dispatching RSL

Felipe Mora scored early, Santiago Moreno scored a goal from a distance after half-time, and Portland Timbers visited Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference final to win 2-0 for the third time on Saturday night. I advanced to the MLS Cup final.

Steve Clark maintained two consecutive playoff shutouts and made three saves to seal his first chance of hosting the finals with fourth-seeded Portland.

Portland won the only MLS Cup title in Columbus in 2015 under former manager Caleb Porter. The Timbers lost to the 2018 final in Atlanta under their current coach Giovanni Savarese.

They will host Sunday’s East Final winner between Philadelphia Union and New York City FC.

Seventh Seed’s Salt Lake ends the playoffs after knocking off the second-seeded Seattle and the last-minute winner of the third Sporting Kansas City with a penalty.

RSL has been trying to reach the first MLS Cup since losing to Kansas City in 2013. They won the title in 2009.

Salt Lake had already drawn 2-0 in the 79th minute after Aaron Herrera received his second yellow card, reducing to 10 players.

Mora’s first playoff goal came after scoring the team’s best 11 during the regular season, and the night when the Timbers didn’t have the two best attackers.

Second-place scorer Dairon Asprilla has been suspended from the red card. Playmaking midfielder Sebastian Blanco built the bench, but if he was injured in the semi-finals in Colorado, he wouldn’t have been injured.

Mora played the role of provider in the sequence leading to his goal when the back heel pushed Jimi Chara into the penalty box. The cross to the character’s back post was cleared, but only from near the penalty spot to Mora, who crossed David Ochoa and sidefooted the finish.

Moreno also deserved a creative achievement in his goal when he stole the ball from half of Portland’s own chest in the 61st minute and found a pocket of space on the first touch.

Allowing space to advance, he soaked the bottom of the left post and unleashed a shot from about 30 yards, then bounced behind the dive Ochoa and redirected across the goal line.
