According to the statement, when they arrived, firefighters informed them they encountered a man who told them he had started the fire. A man named Cory Alan Martin said he found a spider in the mountains and tried to burn it with a lighter, but a nearby brush caught fire and the flames began to spread, according to the sheriff’s office.

“He was taken into custody for reckless arson and placed in the back of a police car,” the probable cause statement said. “During a search of Corey’s belongings, a jar containing marijuana and paraphernalia was found.”

According to the statement, Martin was taken to the Utah County Jail for reckless burning, possession of controlled substances and possession of paraphernalia.

It is unknown if Martin has a lawyer.He was released Monday night, according to prison records.

A probable cause statement said the fire charred the ground from the base of the mountain to its summit and required response from multiple fire departments, including a helicopter force.
