Fort Wayne, Indiana (Press Release): Fort Wayne’s financial position is in good shape as Mayor Tom Henry and Mayor Gary Moe announced the 2022 budget for Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

The plan requires a record investment in improving nearby infrastructure, for a total of $ 41.5 million when combined with enhancements by the park and recreation sector. In addition, continuing to invest aggressively in public security can ensure that Fort Wayne is the safest community possible.

2022 Budget Highlights:

  • We continue to work on neighborhood infrastructure projects and plan a record investment of $ 38.5 million. This includes $ 29.1 million for roads, roads and bridges, $ 6 million for sidewalks and alleys, and $ 3.4 million for sidewalks.
  • At Fort Wayne Police Station, 485 police officers patrol the streets of the city to protect citizens. The Academy class will include 30 new employees. FWPD fully implements the body camera program. There are also expansions for air support units and downtown bike patrols.
  • The Fort Wayne Fire Department will add two new engines in place of Engine 18 and Engine 12. The Academy class will include 21 recruits. The new Fire Department 14 will be built on the southeast corner of East State Boulevard and Reed Road. The new construction will replace the existing Fire Department 14 at 3400 Reed Rd.
  • The total investment in maintenance projects through the park and recreation sector will be $ 3 million.
  • Use of Indiana’s permissible taxation to help maintain funding to provide essential services.
  • The employee health insurance program is expected to save taxpayers $ 2 million.
  • The property tax support budget, also known as the Civil City Budget, totals $ 189.7 million. This budget does not include the city of Fort Wayne’s utilities, where payers provide their own budget.

“The budget proposed in 2022 positions our community for current and future success. Which of us are we to continue to meet the needs of our residents and businesses without interruption during a pandemic? I was impressed with how they worked together, “said Mayor Henry. “Our local finances are strong and we promise to make lasting and meaningful investments to move Fort Wayne forward.”

Thanks to COVID-19, budgeting is unique and rewarding. The 2022 budget was designed to continue to provide essential services to residents, neighbors and businesses, while at the same time securing funding to address future financial uncertainties. Through strong financial management with the city council, the city has sufficient cash reserves to respond to emergencies at uncertain times.

Examples of positive indicators to move forward:

  • Property Local Ratings Ratings continue to rise
  • Steady revenue growth has allowed the city to maintain a very strong financial balance over the past few years.

Mayor Henry will present the budget to the city council on Tuesday, October 5th. That night is also the beginning of a budget hearing.
