MetroHealth Data Security Incidents Affect Patient Information

Cleveland — Metro Health System Cleveland Is working on a “data security incident” that they say has affected the personal information of some patients. A MetroHealth official said he recently learned about an issue involving one of the vendors, CaptureRX, a 340B software management provider.

3News received a statement about the incident from Metro Health on Friday morning.

“Specifically, CaptureRx recently noticed anomalous activity associated with certain electronic files,” according to a statement from MetroHealth. “Following this, CaptureRx immediately began investigating this activity and worked swiftly to assess the security of the system.”

According to MetroHealth officials, CaptureRX took action by changing all user passwords as soon as they learned of the event.

“From now on, CaptureRx will strengthen existing security procedures, including properly reviewing and strengthening information security policies and procedures, strengthening firewall rules, and conducting labor training to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents. We have taken a number of steps. ”According to a statement from Metro Health.

CaptureRX has notified affected patients of the incident, along with guidance on steps they can take to prevent misuse of personal information.

“Both Capture Rx and Metro Health take this incident and the security of personal information very seriously,” a Metro Health official said in a statement. “CaptureRx continues to look for ways to further secure its system to provide greater protection from this type of future incident.”

In addition, MetroHealth provided the following timelines related to the situation.

  • February 19, 2021: Investigation revealed that on February 6, 2021, certain files were accessed and retrieved without permission. The root cause of the CaptureRx data security incident was a vulnerability identified in a build server hosted by a third party that was exploited. This allowed the attacker to obtain credentials to allow access to the server.
  • Around March 19, 2021: CaptureRx has determined that the associated file contains the patient’s first name, last name, date of birth, and prescription information. There was no impact on the Metro Health system or patient care.
