#5 of U.S. universities that admit Hispanic students

The number of higher education institutions admitting Hispanic students in Oregon is increasing, according to a new report.

Excelencia in Education surveys Hispanic-serving institutions, defined as schools where Latino students make up 25 percent or more of the population. There are five in Oregon.

The organization also looked at emerging Hispanic-serving institutions where Hispanic students account for 15 to 25 percent of the population. Oregon ranks fifth-most with 23, just below Texas.

Deborah Santiago, co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education, has noticed a pattern in the enrollment of these students.

“This has implications for state policy, recruiting practices, and where Latino students go,” Santiago said. “Where are they choosing to enroll? And we find that they are very well represented at the community college level in Oregon and at smaller, four-year private universities. Masu.”

California had some of the most emerging Hispanic-serving institutions in the country. There are 600 Hispanic-serving institutions nationwide, accounting for one-fifth of all universities.

Santiago noted that many Oregonians are first-generation college students.

“The perception of college knowledge, financial aid, student support services, etc., may not be as solid or clear for them as it is for others who are not first-generation college attendees,” Santiago said. Ta.

Santiago said her organization is identifying where Hispanic students are enrolled and what that means to them.

Professor Santiago said, “Let's think about what these institutions are doing to ensure that every student who chooses to enroll at that institution actually graduates, and that when a student chooses to enroll, “This is to ensure that the institution fulfills its implicit social contract.” Are their educational goals being met? ”
