Connecting with COSI: What you need to know about the new Titanic exhibit

Columbus, Ohio (W.C.M.H.) — It’s been more than 110 years since the RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage, but the fascination with the ship’s history and tragedy never fades.

A brand new exhibition, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, has opened at COSI. Visitors can see hundreds of authentic artifacts from the Titanic wreckage. This exhibit covers more than 10,000 square feet of space at his COSI location here in Columbus and will be on view until the beginning of September 2nd.

NBC4’s Monica Day took a tour inside to see some of the larger pieces in the exhibit with Titanic Collection Director Thomasina Ray. You can watch it in the video player below.

“You’ll take on the role of a passenger. Most of their stories are untold, so you get to know people you’ve never heard before. We know Jack and Rose, but… They’re not real, they’re real,” said Titanic researcher James Penca.

As you walk through the exhibit, you’ll see objects taken from a ship wreck site on the Atlantic ocean floor 2.5 miles downstream. Artifacts that can be seen include Titanic’s whistle, megaphone, crew boots, and the davits of the only lifeboat ever to surface. These were used to lower lifeboats full of people from ships into the sea.

“These artifacts are truly unique in many ways. If there are others like them, they are still on the shipwreck,” Penca said. You can also check out some of the Titanic’s most iconic parts, including the grand staircase, boiler room, and an actual replica of the cabin where passengers slept.

Penka said the Titanic exhibit at COSI is something that all ages can enjoy. He said his love for the ship started with one of these exhibits. “People, especially children, come to this exhibit and leave with a renewed love of history, just like I did, but with a potential appreciation for science, artifact conservation, submarines, and deep-sea exploration. I also have love,” Penca said.

The story of the Titanic is obviously a story full of tragedy. Penca said people should be aware of that before visiting. But it’s also a story of heroism, perseverance, and love. “Be prepared because it’s a big deal, but you just go home and it’s fun. It’s a celebration of great stories and great people,” Penca said. “It’s literally something you won’t see anywhere else outside of Columbus for the next few months. It’s breathtaking and hard to describe in words.”

The Titanic: Artifact exhibit takes between 45 minutes and two hours to view, depending on how deep you want to delve into the ocean liner’s history.
