COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ryan Day, head football coach at Ohio State University, and his wife, Nina Day, are committed to supporting the university to fund research and services that advance mental health at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center and School of Medicine. Donating $1 million.
The Nina and Ryan Day Resilience Fund will be housed in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, according to a press release.
Nina and Ryan have been advocates for mental health since coming to Columbus.Ryan’s father committed suicide when he was eight years old.
The couple spoke about their own mental health struggles at the university’s pandemic-delayed graduation ceremony in August 2021 and urged the alumni to find friends and loved ones who will support them during difficult times. .
Mental health is also important to student-athletes in Ryan’s football program, which is staffed by two full-time psychologists, two athletic counselors, and a part-time psychiatrist.
“Both Nina and I understand the importance of having someone you can turn to for help and strength in difficult times,” Ryan Day said. I hope you will be able to find the support you need.”
Ohio State University President Christina M. Johnson thanked Nina and Ryan for their leadership and generous gifts.
“This will help us not only provide better service and outreach, but also continue to fight the stigma that discourages those in need from seeking help,” Johnson said.
Dr. K. Luan Huang, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, thanked Days for “helping remove the stigma of mental health challenges.”
