Ohio priest gets life imprisonment for child pornography and exploitation

A Roman Catholic priest in the Cleveland region was sentenced to life imprisonment for child pornography and exploitation. Rev. Robert McWilliams was sentenced Tuesday in the US District Court for Akron in front of a gallery full of families of three victims. McWilliams, 41, has previously pleaed eight cases, including the exploitation of children and pornography. Judge Sarah Rioy of the US District Court said he had preyed on a young man who sought help and said the public needed to be protected from McWilliams. McWilliams became a priest in May 2017 and was a minister at a church school. He was arrested in December 2019 at his church in Strongsville, Ohio. The prosecutor claimed in court documents that he had tens of thousands of pornographic images, some depicting very young children. Authorities also alleged that he forced a teenage boy to provide sexually explicit images and paid two boys under the age of 18 for sexual activity. “I’m embarrassed and sad about my actions and sins,” he said. “All I have to offer you now is my prayers and apologies.” Minimize (damage), but believe that God will heal you. Note that for all who have lost faith, this is my fault and my sin, not the church or the priesthood. McWilliams sought a ruling. Defense lawyer Robert Dixon called his client a “good candidate for therapeutic rehabilitation” and sought a 15-year term under important parole supervision. The Cleveland Parish said the defendant’s “blameable behavior” and “continues to actively pursue (his) removal from the state of the priesthood.” The parish also sought support for “good priests who faithfully fulfill their promises every day to serve God’s people.”
