Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin Earn Football Honors Every Week

Following Week 8’s competition, this week’s Big Ten Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams players, as well as the Freshman of the Week, were announced this morning. This week’s winners are:

Offensive player of the week
Sean Clifford, Pennsylvania
QB – Sr. – Cincinnati, Ohio – St. Xavier

• Completed 23-of-31 passes for 295 yards and led Penn State in career completions with four touchdowns, and Trace McSorley (720; 2015- ) in the Nittany Lions’ 45-17 victory over Minnesota 18) passed.
• With a 4-yard pass in the first quarter, Clifford became the second Nittany Lion to record a pass for 9,000 yards.
• 10th career game with 250+ passing yards and 3+ passing touchdowns
• The three-time Academic All-Big Ten was named Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career and his second of the season.

Defensive Player of the Week
John Tokio, Wisconsin
S – Sr. – Lafayette, CA – Campolindo

• Picked two passes in Wisconsin’s win over Purdue, including a first-quarter interception returned for a touchdown
• The Badgers had two interceptions and one return for the score in the same game since Natrell Jamerson did so against Northwestern in 2016.
• Team most wins with 10 total tackles
• A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, he won the Defensive Player of the Week award for the first time in his career.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Noah Ruggles, Ohio
K – Gr. – Odessa, FL – Steinbrenner

• Kicking four field goals early against Iowa’s top five defenseman helped Ohio State build a 26-10 lead and win 54-10.
• Converted with 4 field goals (46, 41, 35, 26) and 6 PATs for a career-high 18 points
• His four first-half field goals are the second-most in a game in program history, matching eight other Buckeye kickers.
• Second Special Teams Player of the Week honor in his career

Freshman of the week
Roman Henby, Maryland
RB – Edgewood, Maryland – John Carroll School

• Had a career-high 179 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in a game against Northwestern in Maryland.
• Scored the game-winning touchdown on a career-long 75-yard run with 3:33 left in the game to lead the Terps for good
• He had 10 missed tackles on the run. This is due to the Autonomy Five returning to this country this week.
• Received Freshman of the Week honors for the second time in his career
