Kensington Golf Club Head Sean Novotny explains how to maintain your lawn when it doesn’t rain

CANFIELD, OH (WKBN) – I can’t believe the last time it rained was May 20th. Sunny and hot weather for the past few weeks. This can have a big impact on lawns and golf courses.

Canfield’s Kensington Golf Club makes frequent use of the sprinkler system at night. Golf course manager Sean Novotny said the club uses an average of about 1 million gallons of water a night, which drives up water bills significantly. Hot weather can cause some problems with the soil, so his team also waters by hand and uses wetting agents to infiltrate the course.

“We started using large amounts of wetting agents to help water penetrate the ground. Instead of absorbing it, it repels water, which means the molecules break down and the water gets where it’s needed,” Novotny said.

Novotny has also taken a step back when it comes to mowing the course.

“When it’s hot and dry like this, the ball rolls better. I am trying,” he said.

Novotny gave us some insight as to whether the lawn is turning a little brown or looking dry.

“The roots only go where the water goes, so you don’t need to water them every day. , the roots go deeper and deeper to find water … the right fertilizer,” he said.

Novotny says early morning is the key to watering the lawn.

Kensington Pond also looks a little lower. Novotny said if there were no more rains in the next few weeks, it would have to be reclaimed, which would be costly.
