Philip Whitman, who pleaded guilty to bank robbery, says he has PTSD after girlfriend’s murder

Youngstown, Ohio (WKBN) — Memorandum of Judgment in Federal Court. pleaded guilty to the downtown bank robbery says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after his girlfriend was murdered in 2020.

A memorandum filed in Northern Ohio District Court on behalf of Phillip Whitman, 46, was announced Friday when Judge Solomon Oliver was sentenced after pleading guilty to a bank robbery charge in July. I hope that it will be taken into consideration.

“Mr. Whitman is in good physical condition at this time after years of shooting and stabbing,” the memorandum said. “It is Mr. Whitman’s mental health that he will ask this court to consider in making his decision.”

Whitman pleaded guilty to the November 22 West Federal Street robbery of the First National Bank. Court records show Whitman stole about $1,300 and drove east from the bank on Federal Street.

Whitman told the teller, “Cash or guns.

According to the criminal complaint, Whitman’s car was identified as having a dent.

Records show a Cadillac similar to the one used in the bank robbery was located on Youngstown’s East Side.

Whitman was arrested on November 25th.

Whitman’s attorney, Nathan Ray of Akron, said Whitman, a father of six children, witnessed the murder of his girlfriend in 2020 and managed to disarm the shooter. He has been diagnosed with PTSD and prescribed medication. He said his clients want to receive both counseling and mental health treatment.

Whitman was also a drug user until his arrest, Ray wrote to the court.

Wray said he opposed the increased sentencing the government is seeking that Whitman threatened to kill someone if his demands were not met. and did not verbally say he had a gun.

Ray writes that Whitman’s sentence should be in the range of 57 to 71 months.
