A nurse who worked for 50 years retires

Warren, Ohio (WKBN) – Nurses Kathy Spanos and Rosie Minton worked together for more than 50 years and had their final shift Friday.

Spanos and Minton graduated nursing school within a year of each other in the early '70s and went on to work at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where they impacted patients for more than 50 years.

After 40 years as a pediatrician and later in outpatient surgery, the two developed a close friendship that felt like family.

“Today is a bittersweet day. I'm happy and sad at the same time. This was part of our lives,” Spanos said.

Nurses touch lives every day, or lives touch their lives. Mr. Minton and Mr. Spanos certainly have patients who will be remembered forever.

Their fondest memories are when patients see them in the community and remember their compassionate care and say, “Oh, you took care of my baby, or I remember you.'' “I remember your smile. I remember your kindness that meant the world to me.” ”

Spanos said, “I remember we took care of a patient who was a teenager, and he came back years later with a child in tow, and it was like he remembered us.'' It meant a lot that they thanked us for their kindness.”

On their final day, the hospital held a small retirement celebration before they were officially “discharged.”

Minton was wearing the same name tag she wore years ago when she was a nursing student.

“Nursing has given me the opportunity to give back to the community and the hospital. It has been an honor and privilege to care for clients and patients here for many years,” said Minton. Told.

After her retirement, Minton plans to travel to see her daughter in Seattle, and Spanos will spend time with her six grandchildren.
