Are Amber Alerts Effective? The System Is Changing

(WJW) — FOX 8 I-TEAM Police have learned that they are receiving new training and taking new steps to help find missing children at a time when they are most at risk.

The investigator amber alert as soon as possible, but in recent cases columbus This caused significant delays in sending out notices to the public.

The I-Team explored the question many people have whenever their children go missing: “Why didn’t the police issue an Amber Alert?” And how effective are alerts?

The Amber Alert system includes an emergency network to help the public find missing children at risk, and records show it works.

But officials admit the system isn’t always perfect.

Ohio Highway Patrol Captain Ron Raines said an incident in Columbus in December caused the delay. He said it took much longer than usual Amber alert issued for twins Kaiea and Kayson Thomas. The children were eventually found. However, Caiea died about a month later, and investigators said it was a “sudden infant death of unknown cause”.

The I team recently found a large training session for law enforcement from across the state.

“We have updated our training based on lessons learned from past Amber Alerts, especially Thomas Amber Alert,” Raines said. “We updated that training and everyone was retrained.”

I’ve also heard that new procedures have been put in place that the police can use regularly during roll calls.

Newburgh Heights Police Chief John Majoy Leads Northeast Ohio Amber Vigilance Committee. He told the I-Team that amber alerts are rare because police cannot alert all missing children.

“So we have very strict requirements in Ohio,” said Majoy. “This is why we can’t get messages on our cell phones every day.”

The decision to issue an Amber Alert depends on the child’s age, risk and circumstances.

Since 2021, 24 Amber Alerts have been issued in Ohio. All the children were found safe.

Police across the country have told us that investigators have issued 254 amber alerts to cell phones and televisions over the past two years. As a result, the children recovered in all but two cases.

Majoy noted that even if an Amber Alert is not issued, other lower-level alerts, such as alerts for children at risk, are still available to police. This includes barging into a TV program or blaring on the phone to let people know that they should be careful of their children.

Such warnings were issued by Michigan In January, Ohio state troopers were able to locate the child.

Officials, too, said they want to do everything they can to find missing children as quickly as possible and are constantly asking themselves, “What can we do in an emergency?”

“Everyone’s number one priority is finding the child and getting him home safely,” Ms Majoy said.
